Alonzo Demetrius: A Sonic Visionary and Activist

Born on March 25, 1996, Alonzo Demetrius is currently the trailblazing lead trumpeter for Jonas Brothers, and is also a composer, vocalist, and producer, whose artistry transcends genres. As the founder and bandleader of The Ego, Alonzo weaves together a vibrant tapestry of jazz, gospel, R&B, hip-hop, rock, and world music, creating a sound that is both innovative and deeply resonant.

Alonzo’s debut album, Live From the Prison Nation, stands as a powerful protest against the injustices of the Prison Industrial Complex, blending musical innovation with social activism. This project caught the attention of the late Ralph Peterson, who signed Alonzo to Onyx Productions. Peterson recognized the significance of Alonzo’s work, stating, “The fact that Alonzo’s music has today’s edge on it is exactly what I wanted for the label.” This dual commitment to artistry and social justice has set Alonzo apart, making him a vital voice in contemporary music.

His impactful work has garnered recognition in esteemed publications such as Downbeat Magazine, Financial Times, and Occhi Magazine. Alonzo's performance for NPR @Home series in May 2021 showcased his captivating artistry, further solidifying his status in the music community.

A prodigious talent, Alonzo received a full-tuition scholarship to Berklee College of Music, where he earned a Bachelor of Music in Professional Music with a focus on Jazz Composition and Performance. His dedication led him to the prestigious Berklee Global Jazz Institute, from which he graduated with a Master of Music in June 2019.

With a dynamic career that includes collaborations with icons like Stevie Wonder, The Fugees, and Mumford & Sons, as well as jazz luminaries such as Terence Blanchard, Ralph Peterson Jr., Tia Fuller, Joe Farnsworth, Amina Figuerova, Julius Rodriguez, and Terri Lyne Carrington, Alonzo Demetrius is not just a musician; he is a catalyst for change.

PRESS HIGHLIGHTS

Dave Cantor, Downbeat (USA)

"In addition to Live From The Prison Nation introducing its leader [Alonzo Demetrius] to a wider audience, the album also marks the first release from Onyx Productions—helmed by[the late] drummer and educator Ralph Peterson—that doesn’t feature its founder. That’s a significant vote of confidence, and the music here seems to bear out the trust Peterson’s invested in the young trumpeter."

Mike Hobart, Financial Times (USA)
"Impressively, voice-overs and music merge, speech patterns are translated into rhythmic motifs and a passing mood becomes a whole train of thought. But the meat of the album is upscale contemporary mainstream modern jazz with soulful modal themes, well-worked arrangements and a rhythmic blend of hip-hop and swing."

Vagarag, JazzBuzz (Greece)
"Overall, an impressive start for Demetrius who finds his way with a style somewhere between two of the most famous trumpeters of the new generation, Ambrose Akinmusire and Christian Scott."
